Borlis Pass is broken
Me and a few guildmates just went to do Borlis Pass because one of us hadn't completed it, and we discovered that it's broken. We had to download an update when we entered, so apparently it was just changed recently... anyway, even if you destroy all the ballistas and everything, the gates never open and you can't get in to talk to the king, so you can't finish the mission.
Sucks. Hope they fix it quick... wasted a couple hours here.

Make sure the gate doesn't have to be opened with the lever or blown open with a keg.

I'm in the same boat right now, i've been wandering around the pass for over an hour trying to figure out how to get to Rurik but there's no way past the giant doors. The only person that SEEMS like they'd be any help is a dwarf that tells me to go talk to the king and that he'll meet me there. The only problem is the fact that I CAN'T GET TO THE KING?!? Any have any ideas on how I can get around this or am I just wasting my time?

hmmm... if memory serves me correctly I did this one solo few days ago, there are 3 beacon lights you have to turn on at the top of the hill in the village for the king's brother to admit you. Yes 3,.. you may have only lit the 2 you can see that sit side by side there,...the other is reached from the left side on a sharp right turn behind the first one. I almost missed it myself when I ran the mission. Hope that helps.

The magic beacon is actually after the part they're talking about.
Regarding the unopened gate. It is just a bug as far as I can tell. It happened to me once, but I've done it a few other times since then and had no problems. I know it's not what you want to hear, but you're just going to have to do it again...

I don't quite understand the replies here that are saying "I've never had a problem." Are you actually saying you don't believe the people who have run into the bug? It's bugged, really, it is. I myself started Borlis Pass 4 times yesterday and completed it twice. Twice it was bugged to the extent that it couldn't be completed (the doors wouldn't open), once it was slightly bugged (a ballista or two wouldn't fall, but the doors opened anyway), and once it worked perfectly.
Due to the inconsistency, my group tried to experiment (with no conclusive results, unfortunately) with the killing method on the engineers: Landing a final blow by melee, letting them bleed, landing the final blow by projectile, landing the final blow by spell, letting a pet finish them off. Like I said, we determined nothing conclusive, including that how an engineer is killed may have absolutely nothing to do with whether the ballista falls.
The weirdest thing was that one time when there were ballistas left standing (albeit with dead engineers next to them), yet the doors opened anyway. There is something very screwy going on in Borlis Pass, regardless of whether you have run into the problem yet personally.

My first two times through it everything went fine. But this last time with my latest character we killed everything in the zone and the door just wouldn't open. Tried it again and killed as little as possible to rush it and they opened. The mission is screwy but it's not that long so redoing it isn't so bad.

I actually did this quest three times this weekend. The first time, we got through the gates with no problem, but on our way to light the magical beacon, Guild Wars crashed to the log on screen so I had to do it over. The second time through, we lit all the beacons and killed all the mobs and siege engines, but could not get the gates to open even though we had all done it before. The last time we tore through it with the same group of people and the gates opened just fine. Seems like there is some sort of bug involved though I am not sure what it is.

in order to get through the first gate, all beacons must be lit and the npc guard must be alive to accept the torch. once he takes the torch, the gate should open.

That's a different part. They're talking about after that gate, you have to take down all the seige equipment and there's a final gate with about five Ice Golems and a few Stone Summits, and at the sides are seige weapons. You kill them all and take down the seige equipment and the gates should open.
Evidently, it is bugged at the moment. It would be interesting to see what the determinent factor is with that bug.

It's still bugged alright. I've cleaned everything out at least 4 times and can't get the gate to open. I'm beginning to think that this will not get fixed anytime soon, if ever. Is there a way to see the rest of the game without doing this mission. If not i wasted 50 dollars and will NEVER buy anymore games from this company.

I dunno, I definitely did the mission after the original post on this thread popped up, and I got through the gate fine. Which leads me to believe either:
a) The bug is sporadic
b) There's something people keep missing.
On one hand, I have faith that A.Net would have noticed such a glaring problem by now. On the other, I have faith in most people's ability to complete the objectives on that mission without misinterpretating them, so....hmm.
I dunno.

didnt see this suggested but some people say they cleared the map so they probably got this-- the gate in question is the front of the fortress, have you cleared the 2 ballista in the back? just a thought!

I still have not completed the mission but I found another door off to the left, opened it and ended up finding 2 more ballista. After I got them killed the gate finally opened up. Now I can't get by the mob just before the first of the 3 magic beacons. It may not be bugged but I'm stuck right there nonetheless. Been killed in the exact same place twice. I reckon I'll either have to skip this mission or stop using henchmen.

Just did this mission and bonus last night. No sign of any bugs. If you're still stuck there, you can avoid the Borlis Pass mission entirely by heading NW from Yak's Bend, W through the Iron Horse Mines, then S through Anvil Rock to get to the Frost Gate (which is where you end up after completing Borlis Pass).

I finally beat the mission this morning. Now getting ready to give the frost gate a try.
I may go back to Borlis Pass and try for the bonus later.
